MOQ Guide: Minimum Order Quantities for Custom School Uniforms (2026)
"What is your MOQ?" is the second question every uniform buyer asks. The answer is never a single number — it depends on the garment, the fabric, the logo and the color. This guide gives you realistic 2026 MOQ figures from a Quanzhou factory, and explains how to lower them when your school or distributor order is small.
1. Standard MOQ by Garment Type
The numbers below are for custom-design orders (your own fabric color, your logo, your size range) from a mid-size Chinese factory. Re-orders of a previously approved design are usually 30–50% lower.
| Garment | MOQ (new design) | MOQ (re-order, approved spec) |
|---|---|---|
| Polo shirt (short / long sleeve) | 300 – 500 pcs per color | 100 – 200 pcs |
| Dress shirt | 300 – 500 pcs | 100 – 200 pcs |
| Trousers / pleated skirt | 300 – 500 pcs | 100 – 200 pcs |
| Knitted cardigan / jumper | 300 pcs | 100 pcs |
| Blazer / suit jacket | 200 – 300 pcs | 100 pcs |
| PE tracksuit (jacket + pants) | 200 sets | 100 sets |
| PE T-shirt / sports shorts | 300 pcs | 100 pcs |
| Custom hijab / scarf | 500 pcs | 200 pcs |
2. Why Factories Set an MOQ at All
MOQ is not arbitrary. Before you push back on a number, understand what it protects the factory from:
- Fabric dyeing minimum — most woven fabrics are dyed in lots of 600–1,000 meters. Below that, the mill charges a surcharge.
- Cutting-room setup — spreading fabric, laying markers, changing the cutting table costs about half a day, no matter whether you cut 50 or 500 pcs.
- Embroidery / printing setup — one-time machine setup per logo position, usually USD 30–60.
- Size grading — a new size chart has to be graded by the pattern maker; that work does not change with quantity.
3. How MOQ Actually Breaks Down on Your Order
A polo shirt MOQ of 300 pcs per color is not the same as 300 pcs total. If your school needs navy polo for boys and white polo for girls, the factory is looking at 600 pcs of committed production.
Ask explicitly: "Is this MOQ per color, per style, or total across the order?" The answer changes your math.
4. Five Ways to Lower the MOQ on Your Next Order
Option A — Choose Stock Fabric Colors
Factories keep navy, royal blue, bottle green, maroon, grey and white on the shelf. If your school color is close to a stock shade, you skip the dyeing minimum and the MOQ drops by 30–50%.
Option B — Combine Sizes Into One Cut
Instead of 6 separate size runs, ask the factory to cut all sizes from one marker. This is how they fit a 300-pc order onto a line that normally runs 1,000 pcs.
Option C — Simplify the Logo Work
One-position 1-color embroidery is cheaper to set up than 4-color embroidered crest on left chest + sleeve. Heat transfer and screen print also have lower setup fees.
Option D — Share a Production Slot
If the factory has a customer producing the same fabric and color this month, ask to share the dye lot. This is the most common way distributors get sub-MOQ pricing.
Option E — Start with a "Pilot Run"
Many factories (us included) accept a 100-pc pilot order at a slightly higher unit price, then convert the price-break down when your next order hits 500+.
5. Small-Order Starter Packs: What Makes Sense
For a single school under 500 students, a workable first order looks like this:
- 200 pcs polo shirts (navy or white, stock color).
- 100 pcs trousers / skirts in 4 sizes.
- 50 pcs PE T-shirts (for sports day only).
- Total: ≈ 350 pcs, one logo position, one fabric family.
This size order is common, ships in 30–35 days, and leaves room to scale up next season once you know which sizes sell.
